On the 4th of August 2020, Beirut was rocked by a massive explosion. The explosion was the largest after Hiroshima and Nagasaki causing a catastrophic, humanitarian, economic and public health crisis. After this shocking event, this is how Basics for Beirut was born. Through the global outpour of support for the Lebanese community, the Australian Lebanese communities needed a way to donate to many of their loved ones, friends and acquaints and to also guarantee that the goods arrived in their hands.
Sydney’s Nicole Gazal quickly stepped into action, spearheading the Basics for Beirut charity campaign which collected physical donations to ship to Lebanon in September 2020. All financial and physical donations during the campaign went to help rebuild, rehome and feed the suffering citizens of Beirut.
After hearing the news of the explosion, TGL stepped up to assist the charity with shipping the goods overseas to Lebanon. To assist in the delivery of the essential supplies to Lebanon, TGL provided the delivery of the two empty shipping containers. By doing this TGL assisted in filling the container, clearing it through Australian customs, organising exporting documents, booking the required vessel that transported the goods and coordinating with the chosen Lebanese customs broker to ensure the shipping containers were cleared to enter Lebanon.
Our donation to Basics for Beirut included covering all of the costs surrounding the transportation of the two 40ftshipping containers and the goods from Sydney, Australia to Tripoli, Lebanon.
After organising the shipment to Lebanon, the Basics for Beirut team held a gala dinner on the 28th August 2020 in order to gain further support and donations to aid in the recover for Beirut. TGL was a platinum sponsor for this event and attended the gala event to further donate and show community support to this important cause.
As of January 2021, the Basics for Beirut campaign has since closed and is no longer accepting donations.
